The sound of glass bottles being thrown out from the bar near my apartment reminds me of the day’s end. I look up from my screen glowing in the dark and, for a second, I envy them, finishing a shift. The walk out the door and it shutting behind, a head immediately cleared by fresh air and the route home. I snap out of it when I hear the radiator tick, remembering how fucking cold it is outside.
I put my headphones on to work out, and an hour later sit on the floor out of breath. I stare at my deep cleaned interior, my obsessive nature revealing itself in every dust-free corner. I’m thankful to be back after being elsewhere. I feel at ease and newly focused. The words ‘be good to yourself’ repeat in my mind like a mantra. Routine never comforts me for long though, so before it becomes stifling, I make the most of it.
I’ve been going through books. I can’t focus with the tv on or listen to music with lyrics, so I tend to read in silence. I get into bed and let life’s ambience soundtrack the life story of Stephen King, Joan Didion, or Olivia Laing. As usual, I can hear the shower running next door and footsteps from the flat above. At some point, the neighbours who fuck loudly will start, and my concentration will be tested by the mood I’m in. When they finish, it’ll just be the hum of appliances left to lull me into the early hours.
