Field Trip is a newsletter exploring life through the lens of a designer. Mostly essays, notes and things of interest found along the way.
The title is something Virgil Abloh said in his book “Figures of Speech” which I’ve talked about before but is always one I’ll recommend. Admittedly, Off-White was never a brand I paid much attention to so Virgil flew under my radar sadly until his passing. It wasn’t until I watched his Harvard Lecture I understood the extent of his work and how aligned we were on a love for research and having a multidisciplinary reference pool. He’s become a huge inspiration to me through his relentless curiosity, refusal to be defined by one thing and his anti-gatekeeping commitments.
Feeling inspired I got some things made this week for my own sake and to test the possibilities of producing product. Bringing Field Trip into the physical realm has been so fun and is definitely something I want to keep doing, but the samples are far from anything I’d want to actually produce more of and sell. With my main influences being people who practice a less but better philosophy, I would be a hypocrite to preach the same ideals while producing stuff for the sake of it without calling attention to quality and sustainability.
Moving forward i’ll be continuing to experiment with different products and the best ways to go about it, documenting the process as I go on instagram. I want to openly develop Field Trip in real-time, sharing the research I’m doing. Research to me is being in a constant state of practice and consumption so the ‘research’ will come in varied forms from designs in progress and written works to sharing music, books, visual references etc.
As always my emails/dm’s are open to ideas, conversation and feedback, so hmu ✌️
